Tuesday, October 28, MDC held an installation service for Rev. Dr. Phil Zylla, Professor of Pastoral Theology, as the George Franklin Hurlburt Chair of Preaching.
The service commenced with a faculty procession, followed by a prayer from Dr. Mark Boda, Professor of Old Testament, and a word of welcome from Dr. Stanley Porter, President and Dean. Worship was led by Dr. Wendy Porter, Professor of Music and Worship, accompanied by Ashley St. Pierre, MDiv student; Jeyoon Park, PhD student; Doyin Oyenuga, MATM student; Ambrose Thomson, Registrar and Director of Student Services and Assistant Professor of Old Testament; and John Steadman, Director of External Relations and Operations.
Dr. James Payton, Professor of Patristics and Historical Theology, read the Scripture passage, 1 Corinthians 2:6–16. Dr. James Dvorak, Vice President Academic, formally presented Rev. Dr. Phil Zylla as the George Franklin Hurlburt Chair of Preaching. The act of installation was conducted by Mr. David Huctwith, Chair of the Board of Trustees, together with Dr. Stanley Porter. Mr. Huctwith concluded with a prayer of installation.
Rev. Dr. Zylla delivered his installation address, entitled “The Ancient Art of Holy Speech.” The service concluded with a prayer by Dr. Gordon Heath, Professor of Christian History. The event ended with a time of fellowship and refreshments, celebrating a meaningful occasion.
