DESCRIPTION:The hermeneutics group will be discussing Paul Robinson’s paper\, “‘If I Say Too Little—Oh\, I Will Not Say Too Little!’: Jacob of Sarug and the Question of Theology as Poetry.” The article explores the following: Is poetic language preferable to prose for the task of theology? Might we go so far as to ask that pointed question which the Oxford Socratic Club once posed to C. S. Lewis: “Is theology poetry?” By considering the poem-homilies of Jacob of Sarug (c. 451–521 CE)\, and drawing upon Thomas Aquinas\, Austin Farrer\, and others\, this essay urges readers towards a positive answer to that question. While theology might not necessarily be poetry in a formal sense\, Christian theology is\, at its heart\, a poetical-symbolic act of calling forth to God and calling out for more. \nJoin the Livestream\nPassword: z00m (Note that the password has zeros rather than “o”)

DESCRIPTION:The presenter for this month is Alvin Lo\, PhD student in New Testament\, with a paper entitled “A Canonical–Intertextual Vision on the Interpretation Technique of Hebrews’ Use of Septuagint in 10:1–18.” \nAnyone who is interested in joining is most welcome to join\, students\, faculty\, staff\, or anyone else who is interested. As usual\, there is a pre-Circle dinner gathering at 5pm. We will meet in Cullen Hall near the back doors and walk together to the Phoenix for dinner. \nThe Linguistics Circle is a monthly gathering of students\, faculty\, and others who are interested in biblical linguistics. Each gathering\, we have a discussion of a biblical linguistic topic\, based on a paper presented by someone in our community—either a student\, professor\, or a volunteer or invited guest. Anyone with an interest in biblical linguistics is welcome to join\, regardless of experience or knowledge in the field.
