DESCRIPTION:The final Linguistics Circle meeting for the academic year is this Thursday\, April 9\, 7–9pm. The presenter for this month is Jeyoon Park\, PhD student in New Testament\, with a paper entitled “Toward a High Christological Development in Luke 24: An Intertextual Formation Analysis.” \nAnyone who is interested in joining is most welcome to join\, students\, faculty\, staff\, or anyone else who is interested. DESCRIPTION:The Hermeneutics Group will be discussing Clement Wen’s paper: “Bonhoeffer’s Dissertations as an Exercise in Hermeneutics? An Introductory Lecture.” \nIn this paper\, Dr. Wen argues that Bonhoeffer’s early thought\, as given to us through his two doctoral dissertations—Sanctorum Communio: A Theological Study of the Sociology of the Church (1927\, published 1930) and Act and Being: Transcendental Philosophy and Ontology in Systematic Theology (1931)—are themselves implicitly hermeneutical in nature and orientation and therefore can be discussed and evaluated as such. \nThe Hermeneutics Group is a monthly gathering of faculty\, students\, and others interested in the issues surrounding hermeneutics. Hermeneutics is a multidisciplinary field of growing interest. DESCRIPTION:We are honored to welcome Rev. Dr. C. I. David Joy (Principal and Professor of New Testament\, Kerala United Theological Seminary\, India; Presbyter of the Church of South India). In this session\, Professor David Joy will take up “Postcolonial Criticism\,” offering 25 min. presentation on the origin\, overview\, impact\, and application of the methodology. Later\, the floor will be open for discussion (Q&A) for 25 min. Dr. David Joy has authored/edited 32 books and published 40-plus academic articles. Both fourth-century bishops operate within a shared intellectual framework rooted in Plato\, Aristotelian psychology\, Stoic cosmology\, and Galenic medicine\, yet they apply this framework toward different teleological ends. Nemesius advocates a “horizontal” mediation in which humanity serves as the cosmic bond (syndesmos)\, maintaining the created order through moral agency and rational authority. Gregory\, by contrast\, presents a “vertical” anthropology that views embodiment as\, in part\, a pedagogical instrument guiding the soul’s eschatological ascent into the divine likeness. Their divergence lies not primarily in their sources but in the teleological function they assign to human embodiment. These contrasting visions reveal two trajectories within early Christian anthropology: one focused on the moral governance of the cosmos and the other on humanity’s transformative participation in the divine life.\nBio\nScott Barth is a PhD student at MDC\nAbout TRS\nThe MDC Theological Research Seminar (TRS) is a bimonthly gathering for all MDC students and faculty. Situating the texts within the socioeconomic realities of first-century Palestine and the diverse Jewish traditions of the Second Temple period\, the study highlights how wealth was both materially significant and theologically contested. Through close literary and theological analysis of each Gospel\, the paper argues that Jesus’ command is not a uniform economic mandate but a concrete expression of a universal kingdom demand: undivided allegiance to God and childlike dependence upon divine grace; yet this demand takes distinct narrative forms. \nBio\n\nArthur Lau is in the MATM program at McMaster Divinity College. After more than thirty years in the investment banking and asset management industries\, Arthur chose to take early retirement and return to school. As both a fund manager and a deacon\, he has actively taught on biblical perspectives of money and stewardship. In addition to expounding Scripture’s teaching on wealth\, he also offers practical wisdom on managing financial resources. He prays that his seminary education will not only provide a solid biblical foundation but also help him discern how he may continue to serve the Lord in his present vocation. In his free time\, Arthur enjoys playing the saxophone\, hiking and reading. \n\nAbout TRS\nThe MDC Theological Research Seminar (TRS) is a bimonthly gathering for all MDC students and faculty. TRS meets from 1:00 PM to 1:50 PM on alternating Wednesdays\, and includes about thirty minutes for the paper presentation and twenty minutes for discussion. \nAll advanced degree students are invited to present a paper and share your research with your colleagues. SUMMARY:Practical Theology Guild
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Seán McGuire\, who will presenting “Making Sense of Practice in Practical Theology.” \nWhile “practice” is an essential element of both practice-led research and practical theology\, the meaning of this term is often left unexplored. In this presentation\, we will discuss possible ways to define “practice” and how these definitions imply different ways of approaching practical theological research. In so doing\, we will explore the theoretical\, hermeneutical\, methodological\, and ethical implications of practice\, and how these implications relate to theology in ways that can help make sense of debates within the field that have emerged\, and regularly resurfaced\, over the past decades including\, but not limited to\, the use of Scripture\, the role of experience\, and the relationship between doctrine and everyday life. \n \nSeán McGuire is a Ph.D student in Theological Studies and holds a Doctorate of Practical Theology (2023) from MDC. Seán is an Assistant Editor of Post-Christendom Studies Journal and has served as Adjunct Faculty at Prairie Bible College and Carey Theological College. He is the author of Biblical Hermeneutics in the Metamodern Mood (Pickwick\, 2024) and has published numerous other book chapters and journal articles. Seán enjoys cycling along the Niagara Escarpment with his wife\, Jessica\, and their three children. \n  \n  \nThe Practical Theology (PT) Guild is a monthly Zoom meeting open to all MDC students and faculty interested in Practical Theology. The PT Guild offers an opportunity to meet outside our regular curriculum to discuss various topics concerning being a good PT scholar.
