After defining both miracles and natural laws\, the discussion critiques the traditional Newtonian conception of nature as a closed\, deterministic system\, arguing that developments in quantum physics have rendered this framework inadequate. The essay then evaluates contemporary attempts to reconcile divine action with natural law\, particularly noninterventionist models grounded in quantum indeterminacy\, and highlights their philosophical and theological shortcomings. Finally\, it proposes a revised theistic understanding of natural law as descriptive rather than prescriptive\, situating scientific laws within the broader context of creation. From this perspective\, miracles do not break natural laws but represent expressions of divine action that transcend scientific prediction while remaining consistent with God’s sustaining relationship to the created order. \n  \nBio\nHello everyone! My name is Quinten Shannon\, and I am a graduate student at MDC in the MA (CS) program with a concentration in Ministry Studies. I completed my undergraduate degree at Tyndale University in Toronto\, where I earned an Honours BA in Biblical Studies and Theology and wrote my thesis titled “Seeing the Meaning of Mark 13: A Narrative-Critical Approach.” I come from a family of eight children and grew up just up the escarpment in Ancaster\, not far from MDC. \nI currently serve as a pulpit supply minister\, providing preaching and ministry support to churches across southern Ontario. Outside of academics and ministry\, I have a deep love for music—I enjoy playing guitar and writing songs—as well as sports. I am also a student-athlete and play first base on McMaster University’s Varsity Men’s Baseball Team\, and I enjoy playing hockey as well. \nAbout TRS\nThe MDC Theological Research Seminar (TRS) is a bimonthly gathering for all MDC students and faculty. TRS meets from 1:00 PM to 1:50 PM on alternating Wednesdays\, and includes about thirty minutes for the paper presentation and twenty minutes for discussion. \nAll advanced degree students are invited to present a paper and share your research with your colleagues. TRS is an excellent opportunity to “test drive” a paper you will be presenting at an upcoming conference and receive helpful feedback on your current research projects. Thinking about submitting an article to a journal and want some interaction first? TRS will provide it. Just published an article or an essay and want to share it us? DESCRIPTION:We welcome Jesse Hill\, who will be joining us via Zoom to present “The Integration of Faith and Practice-Led Research.” \nThis presentation is about some of the difficulties and opportunities that face practice-led theological researchers whose academic work in some way involves their own life of faith. On the one hand\, practice-led research can lead to the pitfall of cynicism and disengagement with one’s own faith\, destroying impetus for doing research in the first place. On the other hand\, a sense of personal connection and even of faith can in some cases obscure the research itself. Navigating these pitfalls will require thinking seriously about the (dis)integration of personal faith and practice-led research. \n \nJesse is a PhD candidate at MDC. His research focuses on the intersection of phenomenology\, liturgical theology\, and low church worship practices. He is also a pastor who continues to serve incongregational ministry. \n  \n  \nThe Practical Theology (PT) Guild is a monthly Zoom meeting open to all MDC students and faculty interested in Practical Theology. The PT Guild offers an opportunity to meet outside our regular curriculum to discuss various topics concerning being a good PT scholar. DESCRIPTION:The hermeneutics group will be discussing Paul Robinson’s paper\, “‘If I Say Too Little—Oh\, I Will Not Say Too Little!’: Jacob of Sarug and the Question of Theology as Poetry.” The article explores the following: Is poetic language preferable to prose for the task of theology? Might we go so far as to ask that pointed question which the Oxford Socratic Club once posed to C. S. Lewis: “Is theology poetry?” By considering the poem-homilies of Jacob of Sarug (c. 451–521 CE)\, and drawing upon Thomas Aquinas\, Austin Farrer\, and others\, this essay urges readers towards a positive answer to that question. The questions raised by Long highlight the practice of reading for those engaged in the ministry of proclamation. The rapidly developing landscape of reading necessitates the question\, “Do preachers read differently?”  The paper explores the invigoration of theological imagination and language in preaching. This exploration leads to a culmination ‘seeing’ in  the task of preaching. \nBio\nRajesh (Stephen) Paulgnanam previously completed his MTS in Toronto and is currently a Doctor of Practical Theology student at MDC. \n  \nAbout TRS\nThe MDC Theological Research Seminar (TRS) is a bimonthly gathering for all MDC students and faculty. TRS meets from 1:00 PM to 1:50 PM on alternating Wednesdays\, and includes about thirty minutes for the paper presentation and twenty minutes for discussion. \nAll advanced degree students are invited to present a paper and share your research with your colleagues. SUMMARY:Practical Theology Guild
DESCRIPTION:We welcome Seán McGuire\, who will presenting “Making Sense of Practice in Practical Theology.” \nWhile “practice” is an essential element of both practice-led research and practical theology\, the meaning of this term is often left unexplored. In this presentation\, we will discuss possible ways to define “practice” and how these definitions imply different ways of approaching practical theological research. In so doing\, we will explore the theoretical\, hermeneutical\, methodological\, and ethical implications of practice\, and how these implications relate to theology in ways that can help make sense of debates within the field that have emerged\, and regularly resurfaced\, over the past decades including\, but not limited to\, the use of Scripture\, the role of experience\, and the relationship between doctrine and everyday life. \n \nSeán McGuire is a Ph.D student in Theological Studies and holds a Doctorate of Practical Theology (2023) from MDC. Seán is an Assistant Editor of Post-Christendom Studies Journal and has served as Adjunct Faculty at Prairie Bible College and Carey Theological College. He is the author of Biblical Hermeneutics in the Metamodern Mood (Pickwick\, 2024) and has published numerous other book chapters and journal articles. Seán enjoys cycling along the Niagara Escarpment with his wife\, Jessica\, and their three children. \n  \n  \nThe Practical Theology (PT) Guild is a monthly Zoom meeting open to all MDC students and faculty interested in Practical Theology. The PT Guild offers an opportunity to meet outside our regular curriculum to discuss various topics concerning being a good PT scholar.
