SUMMARY:Linguistics Circle
DESCRIPTION:The next Linguistics Circle is coming up on Thursday\, October 10\, 7–9pm. The presenter for this meeting is Aaron Jung\, PhD student in New Testament\, who will be presenting a paper entitled “Information Structure of the Speech in Acts 2 and Its Core Message.” This study conducts an analysis of the information structure of the speech in Acts 2\, employing a slightly modified version of the methodology proposed by Stanley E. Porter and Matthew B. O’Donnell for the study of Biblical Greek. The primary aim is to uncover the core emphasis of Peter’s speech in Acts 2 through a structural examination of the text. \nAnyone who is interested in joining is most welcome to join\, students\, faculty\, staff\, or anyone else who is interested. As usual\, there is a pre-Circle dinner gathering at 5pm. We will meet in Cullen Hall near the back doors (that face the centre of campus) and walk together to a nearby restaurant (most likely the Phoenix on campus). \nAs customary\, our discussion will be held in the College board room\, as well as on Zoom (link below) for those who are unable to join in person. For any questions or comments\, please contact co-chairs Dr. Stanley Porter or Dr. David Yoon (yoond2@mcmaster.ca)\, or email CBLTE directly (cblte@mcmaster.ca) to get access to the paper in advance. We look forward to kicking off the year with a stimulating discussion on information structure and Acts 2! \nZoom: Launch Meeting – Zoom\nPassword: z00m

SUMMARY:Practical Theology Guild
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to everyone who joined us for our Alumni panel; it was a helpful discussion. I am very excited about our second event \, an MDC Faculty Panel\, on Thursday\, October 17th\, at 2 PM Eastern on Zoom. Dr. Lee Beach will be hosting a panel with Dr. Phil Zylla and Dr. Mark Boda about how they incorporate scripture into their research. Biblical-theological reflection is one of the key elements of our research projects\, and interacting with different approaches to it will help guide us through this process. \nI look forward to seeing all of you join us. \nIf you are interested in reading a bit of Dr. Boda’s approach\, he has provided this file: The Heartbeat of the Old Testament \nJoin the Livestream \nPassword: 626331

SUMMARY:TRS - Isaiah Padgett
DESCRIPTION:At this week’s Theological Research Seminar\, Isaiah Padgett will be presenting\, “Charity in the Presence of Scarcity: Utilizing Ruth 2 as a Resource for Old Testament Economic Ethics.” \nRead the abstract and his bio below. \nAll are welcome to attend in Camelford Hall (room 226) at McMaster Divinity College at 1:00pm or via livestream at the link below: \nJoin the Livestream\nPassword: z00m (Note that the password has zeros rather than “o”) \nAbstract\nPerhaps more than any other time in history\, ethical concerns are at the forefront of public consciousness. While some topics have relatively modern permutations\, many concerns are perennial ones. Issues such as caring for the poor and marginalized in society\, the ethical challenges of war and violence\, and how one is to understand their connection to state and government are all issues that reemerge on a recurring basis. One such concern is that of economic ethics\, an issue that is not only discussed in modern society\, but also features prominently within the Old Testament where condemnations of social abuse and calls for justice are frequent. Despite this\, such ethical explorations have neglected many areas of the Old Testament\, choosing instead to focus almost exclusively on legal and prophetic material. One overlooked area is the book of Ruth. While the issues of migration and the treatment of the foreigner have rightly been emphasized\, what has largely been missed are the economic dimensions of the text and its relation to the ethics of the book. With this in mind\, this paper explores Ruth 2—particularly vv. 8-16—as a resource for Old Testament economic ethics by highlighting the character and actions of Ruth and Boaz with attention to the dual concepts of economic charity and material scarcity. Ultimately\, I will argue that Ruth 2 is an underutilized and underappreciated text which can serve to greatly enrich the exploration of Old Testament economic ethics. \nBio\n \nIsaiah Padgett is currently a PhD student in Christian Theology working in Old Testament ethics. Originally from Virginia in the United States\, Isaiah currently resides in Hamilton with his wife\, Becca. Isaiah has a passion for local church education and for helping Christians see the enduring relevance and importance of the Old Testament for faith and praxis. \n  \n  \nAbout TRS\nThe MDC Theological Research Seminar (TRS) is a bimonthly gathering for all MDC students and faculty. TRS meets over the lunch hour on Wednesdays\, and includes about thirty minutes for the paper presentation and twenty minutes for discussion. \nAll advanced degree students are invited to present a paper and share your research with your colleagues. TRS is an excellent opportunity to “test drive” a paper you will be presenting at an upcoming conference and receive helpful feedback on your current research projects. Thinking about submitting an article to a journal and want some interaction first? TRS will provide it. Just published an article or an essay and want to share it us? TRS is an excellent opportunity to broadcast it. \nThis year the organizing committee consists of Dr. Francis Pang\, Dr. Phil Zylla\, and Dr. Gord Heath. To submit a paper\, contact a member of the organizing committee.

SUMMARY:Old Testament Guild
DESCRIPTION:We are looking forward to our OT Guild meeting this coming Tuesday (October 22) at 12-1pm (Eastern time) in the Fyfe Classroom (across from the OT professor offices) and online. This month we’re going to be sharing short summaries of our activities at the conferences this fall\, whether the earlier ETS Regional\, the CATA fall conference or the ETS/IBR/SBL National conferences. If you have been or are going to be involved in any of these conferences this fall we’d love to showcase what you’ve done/will do in 5 minute summaries. You don’t need to have some fancy presentation\, but rather give us an idea of what you are pursuing. If you can join us and have some activity to talk about please send Mark Boda a note before Tuesday (asap). It will be good to be together again. \nJoin Livestream

SUMMARY:Discipleship in a New Technological Era Webinar
DESCRIPTION:  \nYou are invited to join us on Thursday\, October 24\, 2024\, from 12:00pm to 1:15 pm for a Zoom webinar with McMaster Divinity College’s newest faculty member\, Dr. Clement Y. Wen\, on “Discipleship in a New Technological Era.” \nIn this session\, Dr. Wen will use the lens of “media ecology” to share some thoughts on how Christian formation and discipleship may need to shift gears amidst some of the opportunities and challenges afforded us when it comes to a new era of life in our increasingly technological society. Along the way\, some reflections surrounding what it means to be human in the contemporary technological situation will also be offered. Ultimately\, this webinar seeks to be a conversation starter that might carry both theological and pastoral implications for our efforts at Christian formation and discipleship as we look further ahead into the 21st century. \nHighlights include: \n\nA very quick sampling of the kinds of new technologies that are in our midst and how such might affect our “lived ways” of “being human” within the world.\nA brief introduction to the field of “media ecology\,” its current state of reception\, and how insights from this discipline might still carry relevance when it comes to helping us interpret and engage the emerging technological situation.\nComments on how the overall discussion ought to be couched in the broader frame of reflection regarding theological anthropology and the question of what it means to be a human being.\nSome proposed pastoral and practical suggestions for moving forward when it comes to Christian formation and discipleship.\n\nThis free webinar is open to all who are interested in this topic. This session will be recorded and emailed to participants following the webinar. \n  \nThis event is hosted by: \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:TRS - Corey Parish
DESCRIPTION:At this week’s Theological Research Seminar\, Corey Parish will be presenting\, “The Polyphony of Life”: Expanding Bonhoeffer’s Musical Imagery through the Lens of Disability Theology.” \nRead the abstract and his bio below. \nAll are welcome to attend in Camelford Hall (room 226) at McMaster Divinity College at 1:00pm or via livestream at the link below: \nJoin the Livestream\nPassword: z00m (Note that the password has zeros rather than “o”) \nAbstract\nThis paper expands Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s metaphor of the “polyphony of life” by engaging his musical imagery with disability theology. Using his earlier theological writings on anthropology\, ecclesiology\, and Christology as an undergirding for the concept of polyphony\, i.e. several independent voices sounding together around an underlying melody—the cantus firmus\, this paper brings Bonhoeffer’s musical imagery and academic theology into conversation with key themes in disability theology\, including the realities of human diversity\, our need for relationality and belonging\, and the recognition of all people\, including those with disabilities\, as contributory participants in community life. \nBio\nCorey is a church pastor and social service worker in Fergus\, ON\, where he lives with his wife and three children. He studies and writes in the field of practical theology with special emphasis on disability and community. Corey completed his Doctor of Ministry degree at Tyndale University in 2024 and looks forward to beginning a PhD in Christian Theology at McMaster in January 2025.

SUMMARY:New Testament Guild
DESCRIPTION:Join our Third NT Guild Meeting on November 11\, 2024\, at 1:00 pm on the topic Strategies for Asking Impactful Questions. As we await the upcoming SBL/AAR and ETS conferences\, our goal for this guild meeting is to equip us with some strategies for raising effective questions during the conferences. We all agree on the importance of questions in fostering deeper discussions and understanding in the academic context. Raising insightful questions boosts confidence and enhances our engagement. This topic\, I believe\, will not just benefit the conference attendees but to our regular academic exercises in MDC classrooms.\n\n\nWe are going to make two groups\, one of the faculty and previous conference attendees and the second of students and future conference attendees. I will ask a few opening questions to prompt discussion. Participation from both groups is highly anticipated in the discussion to share knowledge about struggles\, challenges\, and strategies for crafting insightful questions. I encourage you to prepare pertinent questions and join the meeting In-Person or via Zoom (link below).\n\n\nJoin the Livestream \nPassword: z00m

SUMMARY:Chapel - Rev. Greg Davidson\, Blessings Church Pastor
DESCRIPTION:Our Chapel services are open to all who would like to join us. We meet in-person in the Nathaniel Parker Memorial Chapel at McMaster Divinity College or via livestream. \nWe welcome Rev. Dr. Greg Davidson\, lead pastor of Blessings Church in Hamilton\, to speak in Chapel this week. He has chosen Galatians 5:22–26 for his text and will focus on “The Fruit of the Spirit.” It is interesting to consider how the fruit of the spirit might reveal how (or how much?) we love the Lord our God. \nBrief background: Greg has a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies form the University of Cambridge\, a B.Sc. in Math/Physics from Trent University\, and has taught Old Testament at McGill\, Queen’s\, and U. of T. But he has also pastored three churches\, including one in Montreal\, and this vibrant church that is seeing spiritual renewal in the heart of Hamilton. \nJoin the Livestream \nPassword: MDC
