SUMMARY:Discipleship in a New Technological Era Webinar
DESCRIPTION:  \nYou are invited to join us on Thursday\, October 24\, 2024\, from 12:00pm to 1:15 pm for a Zoom webinar with McMaster Divinity College’s newest faculty member\, Dr. Clement Y. Wen\, on “Discipleship in a New Technological Era.” \nIn this session\, Dr. Wen will use the lens of “media ecology” to share some thoughts on how Christian formation and discipleship may need to shift gears amidst some of the opportunities and challenges afforded us when it comes to a new era of life in our increasingly technological society. Along the way\, some reflections surrounding what it means to be human in the contemporary technological situation will also be offered. Ultimately\, this webinar seeks to be a conversation starter that might carry both theological and pastoral implications for our efforts at Christian formation and discipleship as we look further ahead into the 21st century. \nHighlights include: \n\nA very quick sampling of the kinds of new technologies that are in our midst and how such might affect our “lived ways” of “being human” within the world.\nA brief introduction to the field of “media ecology\,” its current state of reception\, and how insights from this discipline might still carry relevance when it comes to helping us interpret and engage the emerging technological situation.\nComments on how the overall discussion ought to be couched in the broader frame of reflection regarding theological anthropology and the question of what it means to be a human being.\nSome proposed pastoral and practical suggestions for moving forward when it comes to Christian formation and discipleship.\n\nThis free webinar is open to all who are interested in this topic. This session will be recorded and emailed to participants following the webinar. \n  \nThis event is hosted by: \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Old Testament Guild
DESCRIPTION:We are looking forward to our OT Guild meeting this coming Tuesday (October 22) at 12-1pm (Eastern time) in the Fyfe Classroom (across from the OT professor offices) and online. This month we’re going to be sharing short summaries of our activities at the conferences this fall\, whether the earlier ETS Regional\, the CATA fall conference or the ETS/IBR/SBL National conferences. If you have been or are going to be involved in any of these conferences this fall we’d love to showcase what you’ve done/will do in 5 minute summaries. You don’t need to have some fancy presentation\, but rather give us an idea of what you are pursuing. If you can join us and have some activity to talk about please send Mark Boda a note before Tuesday (asap). It will be good to be together again. \nJoin Livestream

SUMMARY:TRS - Isaiah Padgett
DESCRIPTION:At this week’s Theological Research Seminar\, Isaiah Padgett will be presenting\, “Charity in the Presence of Scarcity: Utilizing Ruth 2 as a Resource for Old Testament Economic Ethics.” \nRead the abstract and his bio below. \nAll are welcome to attend in Camelford Hall (room 226) at McMaster Divinity College at 1:00pm or via livestream at the link below: \nJoin the Livestream\nPassword: z00m (Note that the password has zeros rather than “o”) \nAbstract\nPerhaps more than any other time in history\, ethical concerns are at the forefront of public consciousness. While some topics have relatively modern permutations\, many concerns are perennial ones. Issues such as caring for the poor and marginalized in society\, the ethical challenges of war and violence\, and how one is to understand their connection to state and government are all issues that reemerge on a recurring basis. One such concern is that of economic ethics\, an issue that is not only discussed in modern society\, but also features prominently within the Old Testament where condemnations of social abuse and calls for justice are frequent. Despite this\, such ethical explorations have neglected many areas of the Old Testament\, choosing instead to focus almost exclusively on legal and prophetic material. One overlooked area is the book of Ruth. While the issues of migration and the treatment of the foreigner have rightly been emphasized\, what has largely been missed are the economic dimensions of the text and its relation to the ethics of the book. With this in mind\, this paper explores Ruth 2—particularly vv. 8-16—as a resource for Old Testament economic ethics by highlighting the character and actions of Ruth and Boaz with attention to the dual concepts of economic charity and material scarcity. Ultimately\, I will argue that Ruth 2 is an underutilized and underappreciated text which can serve to greatly enrich the exploration of Old Testament economic ethics. \nBio\n \nIsaiah Padgett is currently a PhD student in Christian Theology working in Old Testament ethics. Originally from Virginia in the United States\, Isaiah currently resides in Hamilton with his wife\, Becca. Isaiah has a passion for local church education and for helping Christians see the enduring relevance and importance of the Old Testament for faith and praxis. \n  \n  \nAbout TRS\nThe MDC Theological Research Seminar (TRS) is a bimonthly gathering for all MDC students and faculty. TRS meets over the lunch hour on Wednesdays\, and includes about thirty minutes for the paper presentation and twenty minutes for discussion. \nAll advanced degree students are invited to present a paper and share your research with your colleagues. TRS is an excellent opportunity to “test drive” a paper you will be presenting at an upcoming conference and receive helpful feedback on your current research projects. Thinking about submitting an article to a journal and want some interaction first? TRS will provide it. Just published an article or an essay and want to share it us? TRS is an excellent opportunity to broadcast it. \nThis year the organizing committee consists of Dr. Francis Pang\, Dr. Phil Zylla\, and Dr. Gord Heath. To submit a paper\, contact a member of the organizing committee.

SUMMARY:Linguistics Circle
DESCRIPTION:The next Linguistics Circle is coming up on Thursday\, October 10\, 7–9pm. The presenter for this meeting is Aaron Jung\, PhD student in New Testament\, who will be presenting a paper entitled “Information Structure of the Speech in Acts 2 and Its Core Message.” This study conducts an analysis of the information structure of the speech in Acts 2\, employing a slightly modified version of the methodology proposed by Stanley E. Porter and Matthew B. O’Donnell for the study of Biblical Greek. The primary aim is to uncover the core emphasis of Peter’s speech in Acts 2 through a structural examination of the text. \nAnyone who is interested in joining is most welcome to join\, students\, faculty\, staff\, or anyone else who is interested. As usual\, there is a pre-Circle dinner gathering at 5pm. We will meet in Cullen Hall near the back doors (that face the centre of campus) and walk together to a nearby restaurant (most likely the Phoenix on campus). \nAs customary\, our discussion will be held in the College board room\, as well as on Zoom (link below) for those who are unable to join in person. For any questions or comments\, please contact co-chairs Dr. Stanley Porter or Dr. David Yoon (yoond2@mcmaster.ca)\, or email CBLTE directly (cblte@mcmaster.ca) to get access to the paper in advance. We look forward to kicking off the year with a stimulating discussion on information structure and Acts 2! \nZoom: Launch Meeting – Zoom\nPassword: z00m

SUMMARY:TRS - Brendan DePhillippeaux
DESCRIPTION:At this week’s Theological Research Seminar\, Brendan DePhillippeaux will be presenting\, “Augustine the Modernist?: The Question of Triune Mediation in Augustine’s Epistemology.” \nRead the abstract and his bio below. \nAll are welcome to attend in Camelford Hall (room 226) at McMaster Divinity College at 1:00pm or via livestream at the link below: \nJoin the Livestream\nPassword: z00m (Note that the password has zeros rather than “o”) \nAbstract\nAugustine of Hippo’s influence upon Western theology cannot be understated\, which makes it unsurprising that his legacy has come under increased scrutiny in the highly critical intellectual context of 20th and 21st century theology. One of his more outspoken critics is the late British theologian Colin Gunton\, whose significant work on creation theology\, the doctrine of the Trinity\, and Western intellectual history more generally was largely framed by a negative assessment of Augustine’s contribution in each of these areas. More specifically\, Gunton charged Augustine with smuggling Neoplatonic thought into Christian theology\, particularly through his use of Platonic “forms” in his doctrine of creation. This\, Gunton claims\, displaced the notion of triune mediation in favor of a dualistic understanding of creation that a) metaphysically confused the creator/creature relationship\, and b) infected the doctrine of revelation with a notion of epistemic “immediacy” that paved the way for modern rationalism. While both of these aspects of Gunton’s critique have been competently challenged by a range of scholars\, the present essay seeks to engage the second of these—namely Gunton’s argument concerning epistemic “immediacy”—by means of a closer analysis of Augustine’s trinitarian theology as it pertains to the doctrine of revelation. This essay contends against Gunton that Augustine’s epistemology does not represent the “contamination” of Western theology with Greek philosophy\, but rather a constructive and dialectical project aimed at the “conversion” of Greek philosophy in conformity to Nicene trinitarianism. Augustine’s epistemology not only rejects key Platonic assumptions in favor of triune mediation\, but even exceeds Gunton’s own criteria for a coherent doctrine of revelation\, which this essay will seek to demonstrate primarily through examination of his later treatise On the Trinity. \nBio\nMy name is Brendan DePhillippeaux\, and I am currently working on my PhD in systematic theology. As someone who naturally loves thinking about origins and pondering the numerous connections between theology\, philosophy\, and culture\, I have found myself increasingly interested in the early church\, especially the writings of the second-century Greek apologists. More specifically\, my current research is focused on the theological hermeneutics of Irenaeus of Lyons\, namely how the central role of tradition in his thinking enabled him to interpret all of Scripture as a single unified story of triune mediation ordering all creation toward redemption in Christ.

SUMMARY:Anatomy of a Research Paper: A Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Anatomy of a Research Paper: A Writing Workshop\nIn this workshop\, we’ll walk through the anatomy of a research project and go through a variety of tips and practical help. We will also talk about the mental and spiritual hurdles to researching and writing well. Academic research and writing is easily the most daunting\, frustrating\, sometimes debilitating\, but ultimately rewarding part of the seminary experience. The bad news is that there’s no easy\, quick\, free-of-anguish way through this all-important aspect of every course you take here at MDC. The good news is that the fight is winnable and it’s even possible to keep the upper hand through each round in the ring. If you want to gain some wisdom in doing this hard work well\, then you don’t want to miss this workshop. Even if you are well advanced in your research and writing career\, you can benefit from this session\, and you’ll be able to share your own hard-won wisdom with others. We hope to see every student there.\n\nIf at all possible\, please plan to attend in person. If you require a live-stream option\, please email Ambrose Thomson.

SUMMARY:TRS - Dr. Clement Wen
DESCRIPTION:At this week’s Theological Research Seminar\, Dr. Clement Wen will be presenting\, “Meaning and Eternity amidst ‘the Horrors’: Marilyn McCord Adams and Wolfhart Pannenberg in Critical-Constructive Dialogue.” \nRead the abstract and his bio below. \nAll are welcome to attend in Camelford Hall (room 226) at McMaster Divinity College at 1:00pm or via livestream at the link below: \nJoin the Livestream\nPassword: z00m (Note that the password has zeros rather than “o”) \nAbstract\nIn this paper\, Marilyn McCord Adams (1943-2017) is placed in dialogue with Wolfhart Pannenberg (1928-2014) over the question of how sin\, evil\, and especially “the horrors” affects “meaning” and “meaning-making.” Because Adams emphasizes the subjectivity of individuals who are “meaning makers\,” she posits that “the horrors” (i.e.\, the most grievous of inexplicable evils) work towards the destruction and undoing of “meaning” and our sense of reality’s “coherence.” The implications of this view will be explored with especial emphasis on how such differs greatly from the way in which Pannenberg grounds inherent\, discoverable “meaning” and “coherence” eschatologically by way of his differentiated omnitemporal understanding of “eternity” and the role this plays in terms of God’s action within history. A broader implication is that a critically-constructive dialogue between Adams and Pannenberg promises to be immensely fruitful and\, as such\, the paper encourages and anticipates further interaction between these two important twentieth-century figures. \nBio\n \nDr. Wen is Assistant Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology and the Howard and Shirley Bentall Chair in Evangelical Thought at McMaster Divinity College in Hamilton\, Ontario. He is author of An ‘Open-Ended Distinctiveness’: The Contemporary Relevance of Wolfhart Pannenberg’s Participatory Ecclesiology and Ecumenism for World Christianity (Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht\, 2021). \n  \n  \nAbout TRS\nThe MDC Theological Research Seminar (TRS) is a bimonthly gathering for all MDC students and faculty. SUMMARY:Linguistics Circle
DESCRIPTION:The first Linguistics Circle for the 2024–2025 academic year is coming up this week\, on Thursday\, September 19\, 7–9pm. Our first presenter is Iain Sungmin Park\, a recent PhD graduate and current Research Fellow\, who will be presenting a paper entitled “Jesus’ Language Style in Contextualizing the Social Identity of the True Worshiper in John 4:3–30.” This study analyzes the conversational style between Jesus and the Samaritan woman in John 4:3–30 from a historical sociolinguistic perspective. By investigating the linguistic choices within their conversation\, this research aims at determining how the social identity of “true worshipers” is articulated in this passage. \nAnyone who is interested in joining is most welcome to join\, students\, faculty\, staff\, or anyone else who is interested. As usual\, there is a pre-Circle dinner gathering at 5pm. We will meet in Cullen Hall near the back doors (that face the centre of campus) and walk together to a nearby restaurant. \nAs customary\, our discussion will be held in the College board room\, as well as on Zoom (link below) for those who are unable to join in person. To access and read the paper beforehand (recommended)\, it can be found the CBLTE forum. For any questions or comments\, or access to the forum\, please contact co-chairs Dr. Stanley Porter or Dr. David Yoon (yoond2@mcmaster.ca)\, or email CBLTE directly (cblte@mcmaster.ca). We look forward to kicking off the year with a stimulating discussion on the conversation style between Jesus and the Samaritan woman. \nJoin the Livestream \nPassword: z00m
