SUMMARY:TRS - Aaron Jung
DESCRIPTION:At this week’s Theological Research Seminar\, Aaron Jung will be presenting\, “Intention and Interpretation of the Bible.” \nRead Paper \nRead the abstract and his bio below. \nAll are welcome to attend in Camelford Hall (room 226) at McMaster Divinity College at 1:00pm or via livestream at the link below: \nJoin the Livestream\nPassword: z00m (Note that the password has zeros rather than “o”) \nAbstract\nThis study explores the intricate interplay between authorial intention and the text as a hermeneutical inquiry. William K. Wimsatt and Monroe C. Beardsley’s seminal essay\, “The Intentional Fallacy\,” not only ignited polemical debates on the role of an author’s intentions in textual interpretation but also catalyzed a paradigm shift in modern hermeneutics\, paving the way for the rise of New Criticism. This shift profoundly influenced Biblical Studies\, a discipline in which interpreters have traditionally focused on discerning the intentions of the author or originating community\, often with limited engagement with the complexities of intentionality in interpretation. However\, even contemporary literary approaches to Biblical Studies frequently emphasize the author’s intention without fully considering the fundamental relationship between intention and text. Accordingly\, this study revisits the debates surrounding authorial intention and seeks to propose a thoughtful approach to biblical interpretation. \nBio\nAaron Jung is a PhD stduent in Christian Theology\, with a concentration in New Testament studies. As both a Baptist pastor and social worker\, he possesses extensive experience working with an NGO dedicated to adolescents\, as well as serving in a local church in South Korea. Now residing in Hamilton with his wife\, Jisoon\, and their daughter\, Ina\, he is deeply dedicated to the rigorous study of Scripture and its effective proclamation through preaching. His scholarly interests extend across a diverse range of disciplines\, including psychology\, philosophy\, pedagogy\, literary studies\, and linguistics. \n  \n  \nAbout TRS\nThe MDC Theological Research Seminar (TRS) is a bimonthly gathering for all MDC students and faculty. TRS meets from 1:00 PM to 1:50 PM on alternating Mondays\, and includes about thirty minutes for the paper presentation and twenty minutes for discussion. \nAll advanced degree students are invited to present a paper and share your research with your colleagues. TRS is an excellent opportunity to “test drive” a paper you will be presenting at an upcoming conference and receive helpful feedback on your current research projects. Thinking about submitting an article to a journal and want some interaction first? TRS will provide it. Just published an article or an essay and want to share it us? TRS is an excellent opportunity to broadcast it. \nThis year the organizing committee consists of Dr. James Dvorak\, Dr. Phil Zylla\, and Dr. Gord Heath. To submit a paper\, contact a member of the organizing committee.

SUMMARY:Chapel - Rev. Greg Davidson\, Blessings Church Pastor
DESCRIPTION:Our Chapel services are open to all who would like to join us. We meet in-person in the Nathaniel Parker Memorial Chapel at McMaster Divinity College or via livestream. \nWe welcome Rev. Dr. Greg Davidson\, lead pastor of Blessings Church in Hamilton\, to speak in Chapel this week. He has chosen Galatians 5:22–26 for his text and will focus on “The Fruit of the Spirit.” It is interesting to consider how the fruit of the spirit might reveal how (or how much?) we love the Lord our God. \nBrief background: Greg has a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies form the University of Cambridge\, a B.Sc. in Math/Physics from Trent University\, and has taught Old Testament at McGill\, Queen’s\, and U. of T. But he has also pastored three churches\, including one in Montreal\, and this vibrant church that is seeing spiritual renewal in the heart of Hamilton. \nJoin the Livestream \nPassword: MDC

SUMMARY:New Testament Guild
DESCRIPTION:Join our Third NT Guild Meeting on November 11\, 2024\, at 1:00 pm on the topic Strategies for Asking Impactful Questions. As we await the upcoming SBL/AAR and ETS conferences\, our goal for this guild meeting is to equip us with some strategies for raising effective questions during the conferences. We all agree on the importance of questions in fostering deeper discussions and understanding in the academic context. Raising insightful questions boosts confidence and enhances our engagement. This topic\, I believe\, will not just benefit the conference attendees but to our regular academic exercises in MDC classrooms.\n\n\nWe are going to make two groups\, one of the faculty and previous conference attendees and the second of students and future conference attendees. I will ask a few opening questions to prompt discussion. Participation from both groups is highly anticipated in the discussion to share knowledge about struggles\, challenges\, and strategies for crafting insightful questions. I encourage you to prepare pertinent questions and join the meeting In-Person or via Zoom (link below).\n\n\nJoin the Livestream \nPassword: z00m

SUMMARY:TRS - Corey Parish
DESCRIPTION:At this week’s Theological Research Seminar\, Corey Parish will be presenting\, “The Polyphony of Life”: Expanding Bonhoeffer’s Musical Imagery through the Lens of Disability Theology.” \nRead the abstract and his bio below. \nAll are welcome to attend in Camelford Hall (room 226) at McMaster Divinity College at 1:00pm or via livestream at the link below: \nJoin the Livestream\nPassword: z00m (Note that the password has zeros rather than “o”) \nAbstract\nThis paper expands Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s metaphor of the “polyphony of life” by engaging his musical imagery with disability theology. Using his earlier theological writings on anthropology\, ecclesiology\, and Christology as an undergirding for the concept of polyphony\, i.e. several independent voices sounding together around an underlying melody—the cantus firmus\, this paper brings Bonhoeffer’s musical imagery and academic theology into conversation with key themes in disability theology\, including the realities of human diversity\, our need for relationality and belonging\, and the recognition of all people\, including those with disabilities\, as contributory participants in community life. \nBio\nCorey is a church pastor and social service worker in Fergus\, ON\, where he lives with his wife and three children. He studies and writes in the field of practical theology with special emphasis on disability and community. Corey completed his Doctor of Ministry degree at Tyndale University in 2024 and looks forward to beginning a PhD in Christian Theology at McMaster in January 2025. \n  \n  \nAbout TRS\nThe MDC Theological Research Seminar (TRS) is a bimonthly gathering for all MDC students and faculty. TRS meets over the lunch hour on Wednesdays\, and includes about thirty minutes for the paper presentation and twenty minutes for discussion. Francis Pang\, Dr. Phil Zylla\, and Dr. Gord Heath. To submit a paper\, contact a member of the organizing committee.

SUMMARY:Discipleship in a New Technological Era Webinar
DESCRIPTION:  \nYou are invited to join us on Thursday\, October 24\, 2024\, from 12:00pm to 1:15 pm for a Zoom webinar with McMaster Divinity College’s newest faculty member\, Dr. Clement Y. Wen\, on “Discipleship in a New Technological Era.” \nIn this session\, Dr. Wen will use the lens of “media ecology” to share some thoughts on how Christian formation and discipleship may need to shift gears amidst some of the opportunities and challenges afforded us when it comes to a new era of life in our increasingly technological society. Along the way\, some reflections surrounding what it means to be human in the contemporary technological situation will also be offered. Ultimately\, this webinar seeks to be a conversation starter that might carry both theological and pastoral implications for our efforts at Christian formation and discipleship as we look further ahead into the 21st century. \nHighlights include: \n\nA very quick sampling of the kinds of new technologies that are in our midst and how such might affect our “lived ways” of “being human” within the world.\nA brief introduction to the field of “media ecology\,” its current state of reception\, and how insights from this discipline might still carry relevance when it comes to helping us interpret and engage the emerging technological situation.\nComments on how the overall discussion ought to be couched in the broader frame of reflection regarding theological anthropology and the question of what it means to be a human being.\nSome proposed pastoral and practical suggestions for moving forward when it comes to Christian formation and discipleship.\n\nThis free webinar is open to all who are interested in this topic. This session will be recorded and emailed to participants following the webinar. \n  \nThis event is hosted by: \n \n  \n  \n
