SUMMARY:Linguistics Circle
DESCRIPTION:The first Linguistics Circle for the 2024–2025 academic year is coming up this week\, on Thursday\, September 19\, 7–9pm. Our first presenter is Iain Sungmin Park\, a recent PhD graduate and current Research Fellow\, who will be presenting a paper entitled “Jesus’ Language Style in Contextualizing the Social Identity of the True Worshiper in John 4:3–30.” This study analyzes the conversational style between Jesus and the Samaritan woman in John 4:3–30 from a historical sociolinguistic perspective. By investigating the linguistic choices within their conversation\, this research aims at determining how the social identity of “true worshipers” is articulated in this passage. \nAnyone who is interested in joining is most welcome to join\, students\, faculty\, staff\, or anyone else who is interested. As usual\, there is a pre-Circle dinner gathering at 5pm. We will meet in Cullen Hall near the back doors (that face the centre of campus) and walk together to a nearby restaurant. \nAs customary\, our discussion will be held in the College board room\, as well as on Zoom (link below) for those who are unable to join in person. To access and read the paper beforehand (recommended)\, it can be found the CBLTE forum. For any questions or comments\, or access to the forum\, please contact co-chairs Dr. Stanley Porter or Dr. David Yoon (yoond2@mcmaster.ca)\, or email CBLTE directly (cblte@mcmaster.ca). We look forward to kicking off the year with a stimulating discussion on the conversation style between Jesus and the Samaritan woman. \nJoin the Livestream \nPassword: z00m

SUMMARY:TRS - Dr. Clement Wen
DESCRIPTION:At this week’s Theological Research Seminar\, Dr. Clement Wen will be presenting\, “Meaning and Eternity amidst ‘the Horrors’: Marilyn McCord Adams and Wolfhart Pannenberg in Critical-Constructive Dialogue.” \nRead the abstract and his bio below. \nAll are welcome to attend in Camelford Hall (room 226) at McMaster Divinity College at 1:00pm or via livestream at the link below: \nJoin the Livestream\nPassword: z00m (Note that the password has zeros rather than “o”) \nAbstract\nIn this paper\, Marilyn McCord Adams (1943-2017) is placed in dialogue with Wolfhart Pannenberg (1928-2014) over the question of how sin\, evil\, and especially “the horrors” affects “meaning” and “meaning-making.” Because Adams emphasizes the subjectivity of individuals who are “meaning makers\,” she posits that “the horrors” (i.e.\, the most grievous of inexplicable evils) work towards the destruction and undoing of “meaning” and our sense of reality’s “coherence.” The implications of this view will be explored with especial emphasis on how such differs greatly from the way in which Pannenberg grounds inherent\, discoverable “meaning” and “coherence” eschatologically by way of his differentiated omnitemporal understanding of “eternity” and the role this plays in terms of God’s action within history. A broader implication is that a critically-constructive dialogue between Adams and Pannenberg promises to be immensely fruitful and\, as such\, the paper encourages and anticipates further interaction between these two important twentieth-century figures. \nBio\n \nDr. Wen is Assistant Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology and the Howard and Shirley Bentall Chair in Evangelical Thought at McMaster Divinity College in Hamilton\, Ontario. He is author of An ‘Open-Ended Distinctiveness’: The Contemporary Relevance of Wolfhart Pannenberg’s Participatory Ecclesiology and Ecumenism for World Christianity (Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht\, 2021). \n  \n  \nAbout TRS\nThe MDC Theological Research Seminar (TRS) is a bimonthly gathering for all MDC students and faculty. TRS meets over the lunch hour on Wednesdays\, and includes about thirty minutes for the paper presentation and twenty minutes for discussion. \nAll advanced degree students are invited to present a paper and share your research with your colleagues. TRS is an excellent opportunity to “test drive” a paper you will be presenting at an upcoming conference and receive helpful feedback on your current research projects. Thinking about submitting an article to a journal and want some interaction first? TRS will provide it. Just published an article or an essay and want to share it us? TRS is an excellent opportunity to broadcast it. \nThis year the organizing committee consists of Dr. Francis Pang\, Dr. Phil Zylla\, and Dr. Gord Heath. To submit a paper\, contact a member of the organizing committee.

SUMMARY:Chapel - Yadi Hu\, PhD Student
DESCRIPTION:This week in Chapel\, Yadi Hu (PhD student) is going to share some reflections on “The “All” that the “One” Requires (and Gives).” She will offer some insights on how Deuteronomy 6:1–6 and Jeremiah 32:37–41 work together to show us what an “All-In” love for God and each other might look like\, and whether we are prepared for such a counter-cultural love or not. \nOur Chapel services are open to all who would like to join us. Dr. Johnson Thomaskutty (Professor of New Testament and Chairperson of Biblical Studies Department at The United Theological College [UTC]\, Bangalore\, India). Dialogue in the Book of Signs (Brill)\, An Asian Introduction to the New Testament (Fortress Press)\, Saint Thomas the Apostle (Bloomsbury)\, and Reading the New Testament in Asia (forthcoming\, SBL Press) are a few of his published works. (for his full CV\, please click the link attached to his name above) We expect your active participation in the discussion to help us understand the NT scholar in his own context. We hope that such an invaluable discussion will enrich our research at MDC. I encourage you to prepare pertinent questions and to join the meeting In-Person or via Zoom (link below).\n\nJoin the Livestream \nPassword: z00m \n
