Both fourth-century bishops operate within a shared intellectual framework rooted in Plato\, Aristotelian psychology\, Stoic cosmology\, and Galenic medicine\, yet they apply this framework toward different teleological ends. Nemesius advocates a “horizontal” mediation in which humanity serves as the cosmic bond (syndesmos)\, maintaining the created order through moral agency and rational authority. Gregory\, by contrast\, presents a “vertical” anthropology that views embodiment as\, in part\, a pedagogical instrument guiding the soul’s eschatological ascent into the divine likeness. Their divergence lies not primarily in their sources but in the teleological function they assign to human embodiment. These contrasting visions reveal two trajectories within early Christian anthropology: one focused on the moral governance of the cosmos and the other on humanity’s transformative participation in the divine life.\nBio\nScott Barth is a PhD student at MDC\nAbout TRS\nThe MDC Theological Research Seminar (TRS) is a bimonthly gathering for all MDC students and faculty. TRS meets from 1:00 PM to 1:50 PM on alternating Wednesdays\, and includes about thirty minutes for the paper presentation and twenty minutes for discussion. \nAll advanced degree students are invited to present a paper and share your research with your colleagues. TRS is an excellent opportunity to “test drive” a paper you will be presenting at an upcoming conference and receive helpful feedback on your current research projects. DESCRIPTION:We are honored to welcome Rev. Dr. C. I. David Joy (Principal and Professor of New Testament\, Kerala United Theological Seminary\, India; Presbyter of the Church of South India). In this session\, Professor David Joy will take up “Postcolonial Criticism\,” offering 25 min. presentation on the origin\, overview\, impact\, and application of the methodology. Later\, the floor will be open for discussion (Q&A) for 25 min. Dr. David Joy has authored/edited 32 books and published 40-plus academic articles. His books/articles include Mark and Its Subalterns: A Hermeneutical Paradigm for a Postcolonial Context (Equinox\, 2008); “Decolonizing the Bible\, Church\, and Jesus” (2012); and “Decolonizing the New Testament Texts: A Postcolonial Task” (JSNT 2024) \nMDC’s New Testament (NT) Guild is a monthly meeting open to all faculty and students studying or interested in New Testament at MDC. DESCRIPTION:The Hermeneutics Group will be discussing Clement Wen’s paper: “Bonhoeffer’s Dissertations as an Exercise in Hermeneutics? An Introductory Lecture.” \nIn this paper\, Dr. Wen argues that Bonhoeffer’s early thought\, as given to us through his two doctoral dissertations—Sanctorum Communio: A Theological Study of the Sociology of the Church (1927\, published 1930) and Act and Being: Transcendental Philosophy and Ontology in Systematic Theology (1931)—are themselves implicitly hermeneutical in nature and orientation and therefore can be discussed and evaluated as such. \nThe Hermeneutics Group is a monthly gathering of faculty\, students\, and others interested in the issues surrounding hermeneutics. Hermeneutics is a multidisciplinary field of growing interest.
