Based in Etobicoke, Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec (CBOQ) equips churches and their leaders as they engage in their mission from God in their community. Comprised of about 320 churches, CBOQ is training, equipping and caring for pastors. We are helping to plant fresh expressions of faith, strengthening existing churches and connecting them with the tools and opportunities they need to thrive. We are serving the next generation by creating resources and experiences for young people and their leaders to expand their love of God and love of each other. Position Overview:

To innovate, equip and resource churches and church leaders to advance transformational disciple making in their local context.  To foster ongoing health (physical, emotional, and spiritual) in CBOQ Pastors and Ministry Leaders through communal experiences and opportunities for growth, healing, and strengthening of their souls. The Discipleship and Clergy Formation Associate is part of the Department of Church Life and Leadership (CLL), reporting to the Director of Church Life and Leadership. He/she will give attention to developing and overseeing a system of platforms that aim to foster overall health and growth in ministry leaders at all stages of their ministry with CBOQ. As with all CBOQ Church and Leadership Staff, this role has the mandate of equipping and enhancing the capacity of church leaders to build and disciple thriving congregations.


  • A mature faith in Jesus Christ, an engaging Christian witness and a commitment to serve through the church. A member of a CBOQ church, or willing to become one.
  • Commitment to the mission, faith and core values of CBOQ
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for this type of ministry work
  • Experience as an ordained pastor in a local church, with a preference for those with Canadian Baptist experience; accredited with, or eligible for accreditation with CBOQ.
  • Formal biblical/theological training required, preferably M.Div level or higher
    • A degree or certification in theological/counselling discipline preferred such as MDiv Counselling/Spiritual Formation
  • Awareness and understanding of multi-ethnic and multicultural issues
  • Awareness of urban, suburban and rural ministry issues
  • Ability to travel in the CBOQ constituency
  • A passionate commitment to developing and sustaining Christian pastors and leaders, particularly in CBOQ. Understanding of CBOQ, Baptist faith and polity is required
  • Appropriate computer skills to develop and maintain records of contact


  • Train and develop leaders to enhance the holistic development of disciple making in the local church
  • Train and develop leaders to enhance the holistic development of ministry leaders
  • Resource for continuing education and development for Pastors and Ministry Staff of CBOQ
  • Create and promote an atmosphere of life-long learning, growth, and personal development
  • With CLL Team, partner with Seminaries, to research and identify primary issues in leadership and pastoral skills
  • Enhance personal development and ministry effectiveness of pastors through well designed and intentional training seminars, conferences, coaching, consulting and networking
  • Develop a network of mature leaders willing to mentor groups of pastors in the areas of leadership and pastoral effectiveness
  • Develop a mentoring culture through strengthening networks and training of volunteer mentors and supervisors as needed
  • Stay abreast of new leadership development models, resources and opportunities
  • Oversee ministry leaders who require more support and encouragement in their current season of ministry and provide opportunities for healing and growth.
  • Work in collaboration with CLL Team to support and encourage ministry leaders in their various seasons of ministry.
  • Other Duties as given by Director of CLL.

Holistic Spiritual Formation of Pastoral Leaders

  • Encourage pastors to take time for retreat, solitude, reflection, and sabbath
  • Offer training to pastors in the areas of discipleship, holistic spiritual formation, spiritual disciplines, soul-care, boundary setting, and healthy lifestyle
  • Assist pastors to commit to renewed efforts to actively seek God’s grace to effect their spiritual formation
  • Connect pastors to resources for spiritual formation and direction, including access to trained spiritual directors/coaches
  • Form and release leaders who will engage groups of pastors in multiple small peer groups for mutual formation and accountability
