The Choir Director provides leadership within the music and worship ministry of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. They will oversee the St. Andrew’s choir and work collaboratively with the Accompanist to plan music for regular Sunday services and occasional special services. The worship ministry of St. Andrew’s is overseen by the Minister in consultation with the Session (church elders}. The Choir Director works closely with the Minister and Accompanist in the planning, rehearsing, and executing of the worship ministry.
Core Responsibilities:
Choir
- To select, rehearse and direct the music sung by the choir. This will include a range of contemporary and traditional church music.
- To coordinate with the Accompanist for rehearsal and presentation of choral music.
- The choir sings in worship at least twice a month from October to May (and may sing in June}. The choir sings regularly during the Advent-Christmas and Lent-Easter seasons.
- The choir rehearses weekly on Thursday evenings from September to the end of May.
- Planning for seasonal worship themes and special music throughout the year.
- Recruit choir members and develop the musical capacity and depth of the choir.
- Arrange for the purchase of music.
Planning and Communication
- To work collaboratively with the Minister and Accompanist on a quarterly planning cycle for music and worship.
- To ensure the communication of worship plans with the Minister, Accompanist and with the church office for publication of bulletins and special inserts.
Additional Skills & Experience:
Any of the following items would be an asset to our ministry.
- Experience as a vocalist and vocal instructor. The size of the choir varies over the course of the church year. It is helpful to have a strong singer who can support and lead them both when they are at full strength and when the group is smaller. It is also helpful to have a vocalist who can sing each Sunday with the worship ensemble.
- Formal piano training and experience playing in a worship setting. Our Accompanist plays other instruments and having a second piano player would be helpful for our worship ensemble. It will also be helpful to have a second pianist who can provide coverage for services when the Accompanist is on vacation or otherwise unavailable.
- Experience working with and leading worship teams. St. Andrew’s has a core group of musicians who play guitar, bass, flute and violin. The choir is usually accompanied by solo piano but is sometimes accompanied by other members of the worship ensemble as well. On Sundays when the choir does not sing, the members of the worship team will usually present a ministry of music that may be a vocal piece or instrumental.
This position is part-time: 8-10 hours per week. Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience.
