WBC is seeking a full-time Senior Pastor (in person) who has a passionate heart for missions, who is devoted to advancing God’s kingdom using their spiritual gifts, who is committed to the faithful preaching of God’s Word in a way that is accessible to people from diverse backgrounds, and who sees ministry to children, youth, and young families, both inside and outside of our church, as vital to our Great Commission.
Who We Are:
We are a culturally diverse, small yet vibrant, multi-generational, baptist christian church that has been serving the Region of Durham/GTA for almost 150 years. Whitby Baptist Church (WBC) is located in the heart of Whitby, Ontario, is situated close to local schools, grocery stores, shopping centres, and has easy access to public transit. We pride ourselves on our devotion to God’s Word, our welcoming spirit, strong sense of community, empowerment of every member to minister, passion for people and desire to serve. We offer services in person and virtually. We also have a self-led service for our Korean-speaking members (on Sunday afternoons).
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
The ideal candidate will:
- have a strong ability to relate well to people of diverse ethnicities and across generations,
- display evidence of spiritual leadership, establish healthy boundaries and manage with an awareness of personal/professional biases,
- provide balanced and constructive feedback employing discretion in difficult situations,
- maintain professional and ethical conduct while maintaining confidentiality and tact in all communication, and
- have a minimum of 5 years experience as a full-time pastor (preferred).
The ideal candidate will be biblically qualified as an Elder/Pastor as per I Timothy 3:1–7, Titus 1: 6–9 and I Peter 5:1–4, and has a Master of Divinity or Theology degree (or equivalent) from an accredited institution.
Preferred Skills:
- Excellent communication (multilingual is an asset)
- Good delegation, presentation skills and technological literacy
- Demonstrates sound knowledge and skill in lesson development and sermon presentation
- Proven coaching, critical thinking, conflict resolution and situation analysis skills; possessing a keen awareness of group dynamics, modelling spiritual and emotional maturity
- Family-oriented and respectful of the wide range of family constellations
- Effective communicator who demonstrates humility and an ethical mindset
- Born again Christian who is humble, compassionate, nurturing, an encourager and uplifting
- Openness to learning, taking direction and working with media and social media tools
Responsibilities:
Besides sharing God-led sermons and nurturing spiritual growth, the responsibilities of our senior pastor will also include:
- Working alongside WBC church elders and church board
- Meeting with members of the congregation and community
- Visiting people who are not able to attend church (hospitals, homes, etc)
- Working alongside leadership in planning worship services and events
Theological Considerations:
There are certain non-negotiable elements to underline beginning with acceptance of our statement of faith. In light of the fact that there is a range of opinions that have become accepted under the general label of “evangelicalism”, we want to be clear about what WBC believes:
- the Bible is to be accepted as our rule of faith and practice; we believe in the inspiration, inerrancy and infallibility of the Scripture
- justification as a clear act of God that declares the sinner redeemed on the basis of the merit of Jesus Christ
- the doctrines of sovereign grace, and that the acceptance of salvation is that of the individual
