On Tuesday, January 17, 2023, McMaster Divinity College hosted a closing reception for The Land About Us, an art exhibit involving four experienced landscape artists which was displayed in various spaces around the MDC building.
J. Douglas Thompson is a painter from Prince Edward County, Ontario, who paints in acrylic on canvas, depicting the atmospheric effects of water, clouds, fog, or snow from anywhere along the north shore of Lake Superior to the west coast of Vancouver Island and the highest points of the Rockies. Thompson’s work was on display since the late Fall in the N.H. Parker Chapel.
Elizabeth Malara, whose work was display in our new Gallery space, originally comes from Krakow, Poland, where she studied for her Masters in painting and design. She is a master painting in landscapes, using watercolour, oil, and acrylic. Her sophisticated body of works has garnered her numerous awards both here and in Poland.
Jeannette Obbink was born and raised in Holland and has been painting from an early age. Two country moves later, having worked as a teacher and graphic designer, you can now find her mostly behind her easel in the studio or outside painting plein air or with a sketch book. Jeanette lives in Paris, Ontario. Her work can be found in many private and permanent collections worldwide.
Heidi Brannan has been an artist for over 25 years, mainly working with glass and stone. She has served as President and Executive Chair for the Semaphore Fellowship and Flagship Gallery in Hamilton, Ontario for 6 years and a valued part of Hamilton’s art district. Her exhibitions have been shown in galleries across Ontario with intricate detail and design in the glass she forms. Her works defy gravity with fluid movement, often combining cast glass and stone.
During our Chapel service, part of the closing reception, each artist shared with us about their work and what inspires them to create. Thank you to all who joined us, especially to the artists mentioned above who shared their work with us. Below are some photos from the event. For more, visit our Facebook page @McMAsterDiv.
