Methods and Approaches to the Greek New Testament is a Festschrift dedicated to Stanley E. Porter, New Testament scholar, seminary president, and Doktorvater to over fifty scholars, pastors, and professors around the world. This volume focuses on a core component of Porter’s career: methodology in biblical interpretation.
All contributors are Porter’s former doctoral students, each carefully identifying, explaining, and applying new advances in interpretive methodologies to biblical texts. Parts 2-4 showcase diverse interpretive methodologies applied to the New Testament: systemic functional linguistics, sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, rhetorical criticism, textual criticism, discourse analysis, hermeneutics, or newly developed protocols. All exemplify Porter’s conviction that sound biblical interpretation requires explicit, well-articulated methodology.
This collection will appeal to biblical scholars and graduate students seeking to understand not just what the New Testament says but how to approach it with intellectual integrity and methodological rigor. It serves as both a tribute to a transformative scholar and as a practical resource for those committed to advancing biblical interpretation through rigorous methodology.
