New Testament Guild

March 2 @ 1:00 pm - 1:50 pm
students in class

We are honoured to welcome Dr. Cynthia Westfall, Professor of New Testament at McMaster Divinity College. In this session, Dr. Westfall will speak on “Biblical Interpretation and Gender.”

She will offer an overview of how gender has functioned as a lens in New Testament interpretation, with further evaluation and constructive proposals as appropriate, drawing on the egalitarian model she has articulated in her work. After the presentation, we will open the floor for discussion.

Below are selected contributions in gender and biblical interpretation by Dr. Westfall:

  • Reclaiming the Apostle’s Vision for Men and Women in Christ (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 2016).
  • “Male and Female, One in Christ: Galatians 3:26–29,” in Discovering Biblical Equality: Biblical, Theological, Cultural, and Practical Perspectives, eds. Ronald W. Pierce and Cynthia Long Westfall (Downers Grove, IL: IVP Academic, 2021).
  • “Interpretive Methods and the Gender Debate,” in Discovering Biblical Equality: Biblical, Theological, Cultural, and Practical Perspectives, eds. Ronald W. Pierce and Cynthia Long Westfall (Downers Grove, IL: IVP Academic, 2021).
  • “Paul and Gender,” in The State of Pauline Studies: A Survey of Recent Research, eds. Nijay K. Gupta, Erin M. Heim, and Scot McKnight (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 2024).
  • “Is the Gospel Good News for Women?,” in Is the Gospel Good News, eds. Stanley E. Porter and Hughson T. Ong (Eugene, OR: Pickwick, 2019), 310–49.

Dr. Westfall is also active in scholarly and ecclesial networks, including leadership roles in the ETS Evangelicals and Gender section (co-chair; Steering Committee member) and in Christians for Biblical Equality (Board of Reference; consultant for the Gender Accurate Bible).
