McMaster Divinity College is conducting a search for a Professor of Preaching (rank negotiable) to advance the ministry of proclamation for both professional and advanced degree students.  This role is for an existing position and will build on momentum that has been generated to deepen and expand the effectiveness of a preaching ministry within the commensurate pastoral theological vision that sustains it. We are seeking a person who will champion the ministry of proclamation and advance knowledge in the field of homiletics with emphasis on the pastoral theological development of the Christian community. The successful candidate may be appointed to the George Franklin Hurlburt Chair in Preaching.

McMaster Divinity College, a premier seminary and graduate school located in Hamilton, Ontario, develops effective evangelical Christian leaders for the church, academy, and society. Applicants should have a Ph.D./Th.D. in pastoral theology or a related discipline with expertise in preaching. Experience in a free church tradition and awareness of the Canadian context are highly desirable.

Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to the mission of McMaster Divinity College and its evangelical focus, be supportive of MDC’s Baptist heritage, be able to sign the MDC statement of faith, be supportive of educating men and women for Christian leadership and ministry at all levels, and be active in a local church during their time of employment. Candidates should also be considered (or aspire to be) thought leaders in their academic field.

Applicants should send to the address below: a cover letter, a complete curriculum vitae, a short statement relating their philosophy of teaching and scholarship to MDC’s vision and affirmations, a short statement on their view of preaching especially as an expression of pastoral theology, and complete contact information for three academic and two personal references (with one academic reference speaking to their preaching ability). Please provide a link to at least two sermons (audio and visual), one expository and one topical. Inclusion of a published article or book written by the applicant, sample syllabi, and teaching evaluations is strongly encouraged. Ours is a merit-based hiring policy, encouraging male and female candidates to apply.

Teaching responsibilities currently include five one-semester courses per year and dissertation supervision. Collegial and innovative candidates are sought who will be able to teach in M.Div., M.A.T.M., M.A., D.P.T., and Ph.D. degree programs.

Applicants should have demonstrated proficiency in teaching via multiple modalities (in-person, synchronous online, and asynchronous online) and at graduate level.

Salary Range: $70,000 to $90,000 (as commensurate with rank)

Qualifications:

  1. Hold a PhD or equivalent degree in pastoral theology or a related discipline with expertise in preaching.
  2. Have significant congregational preaching experience with demonstrated effectiveness.
  3. Have experience in teaching homiletics and/or core ministry studies subjects.
  4. Experience with advanced degree supervision is preferred.

Responsibilities:

  1. To teach a regular load of courses in preaching and other relevant ministry studies subjects as required by the College.
  2. To promote preaching at MDC, in the wider constituencies of the College, and internationally.
  3. To mentor and train both professional level and doctoral level students for preaching ministry and for the teaching of proclamation ministry globally.
  4. To enrich preaching resources at MDC for the wider expansion of proclamation ministry both locally, nationally, and internationally.
  5. To cultivate curricular integration of preaching with a pastoral theological framework for Christian ministry in consultation with administration and Ministry Studies faculty.
