MDC Hiring Two Affiliate Faculty in Counselling & Spiritual Care

McMaster Divinity College (MDC) is seeking to hire two Affiliate Faculty members to fill two new positions in the area of Counselling and Spiritual Care. The purpose of these positions is to support our burgeoning Master of Arts in Counselling and Spiritual Care degree program (MACSC), as well as the Counselling and Spiritual Care specialization in our Master of Divinity (MDiv) and Master of Arts in Theology and Ministry (MATM) degree programs. Primary support for the program will be through teaching courses in the curriculum but will also include some administrative work (e.g., organizing practicum sites, managing practicum assignments). The applicant is expected to hold an appropriate terminal degree in the area (PhD is preferred) and to be registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Certification by the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC) is a plus. Applicants from outside Ontario will be expected to register with the CRPO and are strongly urged to obtain certification from CASC.

Experience teaching in a mixed modality environment (simultaneous in-person and livestream) is highly valued. Experience teaching any of the following courses (or similar) is a plus:

  • Basic Counselling Skills and Interventions
  • Advanced Counselling Skills and Interventions
  • Couples and Family Therapy
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Cross-Cultural Counselling
  • Current Psychotherapies
  • Understanding Human Development and Maturity
  • Professional Ethics and Jurisprudence
  • Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy
  • Understanding Trauma and Psychopathology

Salary Range

$17,500 to $20,000 as commensurate with rank (e.g., Assistant Affiliate Professor, Associate Affiliate Professor, Full Affiliate Professor).

Specific Duties of the Position

  • Position A: Teach three courses per academic year in the MACSC program and advise students in the MACSC as well as students in the CSC specialization in the MATM and MDiv programs toward degree achievement.
  • Position B: Teach two courses per academic year in the MACSC program, provide direction to the practicum program in the MACSC, and advise students in the MACSC as well as students in the CSC specialization in the MATM and MDiv programs toward degree achievement.

Role of an Affiliate Faculty Member

  1. Affiliate faculty members are involved in teaching two or three graduate courses as assigned on an annual basis. They are subject to all the academic rules and regulations of MDC. They are responsible for all the teaching and evaluation of student learning for such courses.
  2. Affiliate faculty for the position in CSC will help to lead the MACSC degree program and the CSC specialization (in the MDiv and MATM), which includes managing counselling placements in practica in accordance with CRPO and/or CASC standards.
  3. Appropriately credentialed affiliate faculty members may be asked to supervise students in MDC’s advanced degree programs (i.e., MA, DPT, PhD) on an annually negotiated basis and are responsible for the duties of supervision as outlined.
  4. Affiliate faculty share in the collegiality and development of a research division of the faculty in their area of shared expertise.
  5. Affiliate faculty participate in research according to their own specialized area of scholarship and participate in academic activities that advance MDC.

Terms

  1. Affiliate Faculty members are an important part of the educational environment of MDC. Affiliate faculty teach part-time (roughly 30% of a full-time, regular faculty load [two to three courses per academic year plus some administrative duties]) on a contractually limited annual appointment by the President. An affiliate appointment requires qualifications comparable to those required for appointment to the corresponding rank or title (usually a PhD).
  2. Affiliate faculty are ranked according to their professional expertise and achievement. The standard ranks are Assistant Affiliate Professor, Associate Affiliate Professor, and Full Affiliate Professor.
  3. Affiliate faculty normally have assigned office space, professional development funds, computer support, and the assistance of a Graduate Assistant.
  4. Affiliate faculty report to the Vice President Academic and are responsible to the President of MDC for all contractual obligations.
  5. Affiliate faculty are required to meet all the appropriate responsibilities as outlined in the MDC Faculty Handbook, including adherence to MDC’s Statement of Faith.
  6. Affiliate faculty are required to meet all the academic regulations of MDC.
  7. Affiliate faculty must report annually on the four key areas of performance evaluated by MDC: scholarship of teaching, scholarship of discovery (research), scholarship of application, and citizenship within the College.
  8. Affiliate faculty are non-voting members of the faculty and may attend any/all faculty meetings of MDC.
  9. As part-time employees, affiliate faculty do not participate in MDC’s benefits program.
