Heaven and earth: The Beatitudes (2015)

Elizabeth studied ceramics with renowned Canadian Master ceramic artists: Bruce Cochrane, Professor Emeritus, Sheridan College; Master Potter, John Gregg, Trinity Western University, Langley, B.C.; and, with the late, internationally recognized, Dr. Annie Smith who founded the Sheridan/University of Toronto Art/Art History program.

Elizabeth’s artwork has been exhibited across Canada, including: Toronto, Vancouver, Kingston and Hamilton; and, is held in public and private collections in Canada, and abroad in France and Spain. Elizabeth has had many solos exhibitions of her work during the past two decades including The Bingham Colloquium, 2017.

Heaven in Earth series was purchased and permanently installed at McMaster Divinity College, Hamilton, in March 2020.

Educator

Elizabeth established her art education career in British Columbia, and since 2001 Elizabeth has been the founding Visual Artist Director at a private High School in Oakville. In addition, she sits on the Sheridan College Art Fundamentals Advisory Council; and, she is a Member of Ontario College of Teachers.

Elizabeth makes her home in The Orchard, Burlington, Ontario; she is thankful to have two wonderful adult sons who are creative individuals.

Artist Statement

I am thankful for the privilege to make work with the Creative Holy Spirit.

Within the sacred space of Lake Superior’s windward shoreline my aesthetic was founded: I grew up beside Superior, this powerful inland sea that smooths granite stones within skies ablaze.

Abstraction became my style. I love to pare images to their essence and I love to peel words to their trueness in meaning, then to join them together as they become visual meditations of an inner transformation process.

Creating is worship. My work documents my experience in love with God—his creation, Word, Holy Spirit—in my life as I know his unfailing faithful love.

Clay is my favourite medium; a symbol of our humanity. During the 19-hour firing to 1800°F, a sign of refinement, I apply gold leaf, a symbol of divinity—the spiritual light, the Glory of Heaven.

A refinement of over three decades of creative process in sculpture, photographs and paintings. Recently with my studies at MDC, I have begun to see the lovely integration of art and theology as I make contemporary icons, which become places of contemplation.
